The Benefits of Installing Composite Roofing
February 22, 2018
At Lankford Roofing, we offer expert roof replacement services. We carry a range of roofing options for homeowners. One of them is composite roofing, a rather uncommon type of roof that’s a great alternative to the usual asphalt and wood shake shingles.

In this post, we’ll discuss what composition shingles are and how installing it in your home will benefit you.
Composite Shingle Roofs
As its name suggests, composite roofing is made of different materials. Usually, though, it’s made from resins and rubber compounds extracted from reclaimed tires mixed with asphalt. This combination of materials results in the distinct look of slate roofing at an affordable price.
Durable Roofing
Composite shingles aren’t just great at mimicking slate roofs. As local roof replacement contractors, we recommend them if you want a roof with sheer durability and considerable weather tolerance.
This all stems from the composite materials themselves, which last longer than their natural counterparts. In comparison, the standard wood shake roof will last for around 20 years at best. Composition shingles can last up to 30 years with proper care and maintenance.
Impact-Resistant
Composite shingles also boast higher impact resistance compared to other roofing materials. These shingles have the ability to endure strong winds and resist scratching and punctures from wind-driven debris. As a result, they’re a more viable option if your location experiences moderate to strong winds.
Weather-Tolerant
Finally, composite shingles are well-known for their higher weather tolerance compared with the usual roofing options. Thanks to the synthetic materials used in its creation, the roof is naturally resilient to both rain and extreme sunlight.
Are composite shingles a good choice for hail country?
Many composite shingles are built to resist impact, which is one reason they appeal in North Texas. Before choosing one for hail, check a few things.
- The impact rating. The common test is UL 2218, and Class 4 is its highest rating. Make sure the exact product you are buying carries it, not just the brand.
- Insurance. Some insurers give a discount for a Class 4 roof. Ask your agent what proof they need, and keep the product label and invoice.
- What Class 4 means. The shingle passed a lab test in which steel balls are dropped on it from set heights. It does not make a roof hail proof, and very large hail can still damage it.
- Hail in the warranty. Some composite warranties mention hail and some do not, so read that section before you buy.
- Future repairs. Ask whether matching pieces will be easy to get if a storm damages part of the roof.
