For the most part, the space between your fence is largely a matter of taste. There are, however, a few considerations to take into account. For instance, if you have pets or small children, you won’t want a fence with gaps that are so wide that they might fit through the gaps. Some fencing materials also expand when wet.
Ideal Picket Spacing
No matter what size gap you decide to leave between pickets, it is important that they are not under 3/8 inches or over 3 and 1/2 inches. Fence gaps that are four inches or wider will not be safe for families with small pets or young children running around.
Main Privacy Fence Styles
Privacy fences come in two main styles: solid and shadowbox or alternate board. As the name suggests, solid fencing offers maximum privacy while still ensuring there is adequate air circulation. The boards of a solid privacy fence can be butted tightly together, only leaving enough space, usually 3/8 to 1/4 inch, to allow for the material to contract and expand when wet.
Shadowbox fencing, on the other hand, are picket fences with staggered rows of pickets on each side of the fence rails. These are commonly referred to as “good neighbor” fences because they look good on both sides. While not offering the same level of privacy as solid fences, shadowbox fences are generally more durable because of the alternating pickets. This configuration distributes weight evenly between the rails, which can help prevent sagging or falling pickets.
