• The roof deck has warped. Typically made of plywood or oriented strand board (OSB), the roof deck serves as the foundation of the asphalt roof shingles. But they may also be the reason for their rippling. The fact is that the deck has to be completely dry before the shingles are attached to it. Otherwise, moisture will linger within the material and encourage mold growth and rot. Over time, the deck boards will become warped, creating a rippling effect on the roof surface.

• The roof underlayment was wet during the roof installation. This usually occurs when the asphalt shingle roof is new. The underlayment is a strip of waterproof material applied between the shingles and decking, acting as a barrier against water infiltration. But if the underlayment was wet when the shingles were installed, it can lead to a wavy appearance on your roof. This is one of the many reasons most roofing contractors wait until it’s bright and sunny out before they install a new roof system. 

• The newer asphalt shingles are laid over the old ones. A new shingle roof system can be installed either via a roof tear-off or roof layover. A tear-off involves the complete removal of the old roof system before the new one is installed. A layover, on the other hand, involves laying the new shingles over the old ones. The problem with a roof layover is that it puts additional load on the roof structure. This, in turn, causes the roof system to sag, which should explain the rippling you see on its surface.
