Your home’s gutter system is designed to protect your home from moisture damage caused by water runoff, but even your gutters are prone to different kinds of problems.
Busted Seams
A common problem with sectioned gutter systems is that their seams can develop leaks. This happens when the sealant is cracked or if individual sections get warped by extreme temperature changes. For this type of issue, damaged sections are completely replaced, although minor leaks can be remedied by applying a layer of sealant.
Pooling Water
Gutter must keep water runoff flowing towards the downspout and into the storm drain. Unfortunately, dirt and debris can accumulate and block the flow of water. Trough clogs can be cleared out fairly quickly, but downspout clogs may require opening up an entire section to locate and remove the buildup.
Rust or Corrosion
Even gutter systems that use rust-resistant materials can still have problems with rust and corrosion. If corrosion occurs in the nails or fasteners securing the gutter, it could greatly weaken the entire system and cause the gutters to fall out under the weight of the runoff. Experts will generally recommend switching to new and corrosion-resistant fasteners to avoid this issue.
Impact Damage
Some gutter issues can’t be avoided. This is especially true for impact damage caused by windborne debris hitting the gutter, causing entire sections to get bent out of shape. Minor impact damage may be fixed by hammering the dents out, but more serious cases will generally warrant a full replacement.
