Gutters work to keep your home safe and intact by directing rainwater away to where it can’t do any harm. But they won’t be able to do this crucial job if they’re pulling away from the roofline. The telltale signs of this particular issue are easy enough to spot. You know your gutters are already coming loose if:
1. They appear visibly detached. Your gutter system should run perfectly straight along the edge of your roof. But if it seems to be bowing down in some areas instead, it’s possible that the system is already pulling away from the fascia board where it used to be securely attached.
2. There’s water leaking behind the gutters. Your gutters keep your home safe against water exposure by draining runoff via the downspouts. But when they become loose, the rainwater ends up running behind the fascia board instead, creating leaks that gradually worsen over time.
3. You can see an opening between the gutters and exterior wall. Gutters should connect almost seamlessly to your home’s exterior wall. If you can see a gap widening between them, however, this should clue you in that your current gutters are already coming loose.
Why Gutters Pull Away From the Fascia
The most common reason for loosened gutters is congestion. When leaves, pine needles, bird’s nests and other loose debris build up inside the system, they create blockages that make it difficult to drain runoff. The weight of the accumulation, along with the backed-up water, puts strain on the system, causing them to break loose from the fascia. Luckily, you can avoid this problem just by having your gutters cleaned regularly or installing an effective gutter protection system.
If the gutters are already coming loose, however, you can probably get away with having them repaired or re-attached to the roofline with newer hardware. This, of course, depends on the severity of the problem. An old, rusty or leaky gutter system that’s also coming loose may require a more permanent solution.
